Periodontal Treatment & Maintenance
The first treatment recommended for treatment of periodontal disease is scaling and root planing. Root planing is used to remove plaque and tartar beneath the gumline. A local anesthetic may be given to reduce any discomfort. Plaque and tartar are carefully removed down to the bottom of each pocket. The tooth's root surfaces are then smoothed to allow the gum tissue to heal and reattach to the tooth. Additional treatment may be needed depending upon how well the pockets have healed. We check the healing after two months.
If the tissue heals to acceptable levels, we schedule the periodontal patient shorter intervals between cleanings. This allows us to see how well the patient is doing with home hygiene care. Pocket depths are measured again to assure there has been no relapse of the disease.
Our team of caring professionals are take the time necessary to perform these procedures correctly. Our hygienists have over 18 years experience. They educate our patients with home care instructions, an integral part of successful periodontal therapy. Both of our hygienists have 4 year bachelor degrees from The Ohio State University.
