Dental Implants

Dental implants have made it possible to replace missing or broken teeth with a restoration that feels and looks very natural. Implants allow dentists to restore lost dentition with a fixed restoration that restores form and function. Implants are more stable and efficient than dentures. Implants can be used to replace one or more missing teeth.

Dental implants can provide a good foundation to stabilize removable dentures. Implants can prevent further bone loss and stimulate bone growth. There are several good options utilizing implants and dentures together.

What is a dental implant?

An implant is a small diameter titanium cylinder or screw that is placed in the bone and allowed to heal for several months. An artificial tooth is then attached to the implant by either cement or a screw.

Why dental implants?

There are two main advantages of an implant. The teeth next to the space are not affected and the implant helps maintain the bone in the area. A conventional bridge requires significant reduction of the teeth adjacent to the space. An implant restoration does not depend upon the adjacent teeth for support and requires no tooth reduction or alteration. In addition, the implant crowns are retrievable and repairable. No hooks or attachment devices are needed. Implant restorations can look and feel just like your own teeth.

Are dental implants a good choice for me?

Anyone missing one or more teeth is a candidate for dental implants. Individual evaluation is necessary. Quality and quantity of bone and general health condition may be limiting factors. Your diagnosis and treatment plan will include x-rays, models, and a thorough exam.
